HERricane Program Strengthening Diversity in Emergency Management Careers Takes Place in Los Angeles
Presentations by FEMA Administrator Deanne Criswell (read her remarks, here), Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti, L.A. Fire Chief Kristin Crowley, and other public and private officials headline a week-long program designed to help inspire the next generation of L.A. City leaders pursue careers in emergency management.
WHAT:
The Institute for Diversity and Inclusion in Emergency Management’s (I-DIEM) inaugural HERricane program in Los Angeles is being held the first week of August 2022, in downtown L.A. Sponsored by Farmers Insurance and hosted by the City of Los Angeles Emergency Management Department (EMD), HERricane LA was designed to bring together young women, ages 15-25 from under-represented communities across Los Angeles to explore careers in emergency management and
related fields, while growing their leadership skills.
Throughout the week, more than 40 participants are taking part in engaging and hands-on development training activities with the goal of equipping them with disaster preparedness and emergency management skills to pave the way to achieve their personal and professional goals and help ensure success in their careers.
WHY:
According to I-DIEM’s female founder and executive director Chauncia Willis, women are underrepresented in emergency management fields and are disproportionately impacted by disasters. The HERricane program strives to help those in diverse communities learn about disaster response while providing them with opportunities to explore a variety of career paths in emergency management.
