At 3:43 am on Friday, September 13, a multi-story apartment building under construction on New Depot Street in Chinatown caught fire. LA City Fire responded to the major blaze -- working several hours to extinguish it, however three nearby buildings were impacted. More than 50 local residents, along with their pets, were at least temporarily displaced. Two of the structures were red tagged: unsafe to inhabit; two others are partially closed.
LA City Recreation & Parks, working with the American Red Cross and other nonprofits, established a temporary shelter for several nights and provided food, cots, and other aid, at the City's Alpine Recreation Center nearby.
